Who are the Valkers®?
The Valkers® are a warrior-race of bi-pedal reptilians in the universe of D’Olex. Before and during the events of Book 1: Quorum Treaty, the Valkers are spreading their darkness from galaxy to galaxy. Their lust for conquering lands has taken them far from their home planet, and into star systems inhabited by the Alliance of Planets. Conflict between the Valkers and other races has been raging for millennia. They have warred against most races across the known universe at one time or another.
Valkers stand as a man would, albeit they are taller and a tail grows were buttocks would be. Their skin is composed of scales. This greyish-green pigment covers their whole body and in some places Valkers have tougher scales, like the thin band that runs down their back to their tail. They have two powerful legs that appear quite muscly. Their legs allow them to run fast and leap further than a human is able to. Attached to each high, supportive ankle are three clawed toes. These claws are very sharp.
“The Valkers. They are the dark; a wave of energy that devours races. They blind their enemies and scare them with darkness, and when they land ships their armada could blacken out any sun.”
The Valker Standard is the insignia of the Valkers. It depicts the half-torso of a Valker Warrior, showing respect. Valkers offer respect by lunging to one knee (a bit like an exercise lunge) and rearing their tail overhead, so that it arches into their clawed hands. When Valkers hold their tail, they are vulnerable. This is because they use their tail in both defence and attack.
Valkers® at War
Many point of view (POV) characters make reference to Valker prowess in battle, yet it is not until half-way through Book 1 that readers witness it firsthand. Most Valkers are skilled fighters; raised from birth in the art of combat, encouraged to give their lives for the greater good, and promised a lasting legacy if they excel in the theatre of war. Valkers use their tail as a weapon. Tails can whip an enemy, or throw and deflect objects. Leaping towards a foe is common. Valkers use their powerful legs and tail to jump forward onto their enemies. Highly trained Warriors may even launch themselves off walls in a “gravity defying” act. A leaping Valker would try to land on their enemy with their long toe claws. These claws can inflict deep wounds – think Deinonychus style, for those who like dinosaurs.
Why are Valkers linked to darkness? There could be two reasons. Firstly, the Valkers are followers of the Ancients (Ancient Gods). In the Lore of Energy and Light universe there are two types of gods – the Ancients and the Mystics. Most races follow the Mystics, the gods associated with positive energy and light. It is perceived that the Ancients and Mystics are in opposition, which would make the Ancients the darkness in the equation.
Secondly, Warriors of the Cross and citizens often witness the Valker Armada. Such a vast fleet of ships can cover a huge expanse of skyline or space. When these ships gather together they are so numerous that they can prevent other objects from being seen, like space stations or even suns.
“Zach felt a stab of fear. What he thought was a planet in the distance was actually part of the Valker Armada bunched together. Its wall of black had blocked out the rays between Quorum Treaty and the sun. When they talk about the Darkness, this is what they mean.“
“Burn marks from continual laser fire scorched the walls like graffiti. Zach shot a Valker coming straight at him. Splat! Its legs flew off in a trail of sinews. Blood dashed his face and momentarily blinded him from the fact a second Valker had leapt on top of him. Zach Salt pulled a knife and went slashing at its gullet, ripping bits of flesh in a manner that looked like macabre Morse code.”
