Glen Rothlisberger joins the Committee at the Peter Cowan Writers’ Centre
It is with pleasure that I can officially announce I have joined the Peter Cowan Writers’ Centre. For those of you who are not yet familiar with the centre, it is located on the beautiful grounds of Edith Cowan University (ECU) Joondalup Campus, at Edith Cowan House.
I have joined the Peter Cowan Writers’ Centre in two capacities. The first being a Member of the Management Committee for the centre. It is an honour to sit alongside the likes of Glen Phillips, ECU’s Liaison Officer, and Dawn Bown, the Vice President of the Centre. I hope to add value to the Centre that has given so much to the WA writing community since 1995.
Secondly, I will be taking the reins of promoting the centre to WA writers as its new Marketing Manager. The Peter Cowan Writers’ Centre has a stellar reputation in Australian literary circles and it is an honour to be able press forward with this brand. Most recently the Centre launched a series of open writing competitions that attracted exceptionally talented authors state-wide.
By far the coolest thing about the Peter Cowan Writers’ Centre…is well, the name of the Centre. It turns out it is unclear why and by whom the decision was made to name the house after Peter Cowan, a well-known WA writer and the grandson of Edith Cowan. In 1995, after having been approached by Julie Lewis who had asked him to agree to this honour, Peter Cowan stated – from his home at 149 Alfred Road, Mount Claremont:
“Your suggestion about naming the old Cowan house did surprise me, and I was rather uncertain for various reasons. I was surprised because as you know I’ve pursued a rather solitary literary course. I’ve not been a ‘joiner’, and I imagine there might be other names for the centre thought more appropriate.”
Quite a grounded and humble response. Peter Cowan did go on to say that he indeed liked the idea of the house being named after him, because it would be, and I am paraphrasing, “fitting it retained the Cowan name”.
So, watch this space about exciting new things to come out of the Peter Cowan Writers’ Centre. We have a big calendar of events planned for the rest of 2017.
May the stars be aligned
