It was mid-2018 when the first words to Lore of Energy and Light® were penned. I have come to enjoy the craft immensely. Below are of some of things that have come to inspire this science fiction book series.
Energy and Light: two words that have so many meanings and applications. So what better basis for a sci-fi thriller than using two words everyone has an opinion on? Let’s take “energy”. For some people it means power – a way to fuel the gadgets in their lives. For others, it holds a deeper meaning and purpose. Concepts like mental energy and free-energy come to mind. In Lore of Energy and Light, energy blurs all of those meanings. It has been fun to play with the myriad of possibilities energy could be, and then try to place a lore or code on top of it.
The same was true for the word “light”. Is light just the thing that springs to life from a light bulb? Is light just the colours that make strobe lights so fun at nightclubs? To this day, there are some properties of light we are yet to understand. Light can be a weapon in the form of lasers, light can carry messages, light can brighten the darkness. I prefer to think of light as positive energy, hope, and vision. Combine all the above notions and you have the foundation for the lore of energy and light.
The word “lore” in the book title Lore of Energy and Light® is my favourite part. Why? Because lore does not equal law. The word lore holds a mythical element. It is not set in stone, it is not often widely known, it is not a rule handed down by man or living creature. I believe the universe gives us lore. Nature’s natural order is a compass point for life, and when life strays away from its intended course, the universe conspires to sway things back to equilibrium.
The novel is full of space battles, lasers, and (hopefully) interesting characters. The story is structured in ‘point of view’ chapters that weave together to form the reader’s knowledge of this universe.
I really like strict point of view writing. It is hard. There is always the temptation to fall back to into telling a story as the omniscient narrator. Yet it feels more real and exciting to witness events as a reader first-hand by tasting, touching, and feeling what a character goes through. As I write this blog post the novel is in draft stage. All but a few chapters have been written. Now it is time to go back and polish it. Thanks for reading. I hope you like the Lore of Energy and Light when is it ready.
