“Harjo” is a title that wealthy warlords bestow upon themselves in the universe of D’Olex. Throughout D’Olex there are numerous Harjos controlling small pockets of land, particularly in the star system of Thruress where the Alliance of Planets has little presence, and the Valkers are yet to wage war.
Harjos generally have a small garrison protecting their compound. Inside these compounds, a Harjo may be operating a variety of activities; like running sex houses or training and selling Craggoos.
“Phases ago, Illick once worked for a Harjo. In the olden text of the Mystics, Harjo meant war band. Illick was a realist. A Harjo was nothing more than a self-styled Warlord. That was the thing; anyone with enough Rank could call themselves a Harjo. An empty title for the powerful, yet they took what they wanted. Harjos were not chosen by the citizens, nor did they possess the powers of the appointed Administration. But in practice it was very different. City Administrators may have made the rules, but they asked the Harjos where and how to apply them.”
WARNING: spoilers ahead
Throughout the first novel we are introduced to two Harjos. A POV character named Illick meets a Harjo calling himself Marcanian.
“Marcanian was the local Harjo on the planet of Uoung. He was a warlord in truth. Marcanian honoured himself in rich silks, sewn with images of his own face. He had grown long blonde hair that hid much of his bronze features, high cheek bones and full lips. Marcanian did not hide the fact that the sex trade had been very kind to him. Sparkling white crystals bedecked his hands – jewels that flaunted the rewards of taking risk.”
The relationship between the Harjos and that of the Alliance of Planets appears to be complex. However the relationship between the Harjos and the Valkers seems quite clear cut. The Valkers depose any Harjo within the Gstaddt. Whilst the reptilians are not at war with the Harjos, they do not want them operating in their conquered territories. Doing so places an added layer of authority between them and the local citizens.
