“Break all the rules. There is no right or wrong, so write WHATEVER you want.”- author Glen Rothlisberger
After a wave of positivity (for which I am super grateful for), the first questions I get asked when my friends learn that I have written a science fiction book are: What writing course did you attend? What writing books have you read?
The answer is: NONE and NONE.
That’s a bit smug …
Hang on, don’t stop reading.
Let me explain. My message to prospective authors is: do not feel intimidated or ill-prepared if you have never written before.

Break the rules.
I am here to say you do not need to attend a writing course. In fact, to write a unique novel, I would urge against it. Your mere attendance at such a course will likely restrict your style – you will start to worry too much about all the do’s and don’ts.
Break the rules.
How can you break the mould if you are being taught from the cookie cutter? An author who stands out from the crowd is one that generally brings a fresh story or style to the reader.

I grew up in Newcastle, Australia. Our family home was by the beach. Instead of reading, I grew up playing in bushland, climbing trees and chasing snakes. As a child my mum always told me I could be anything I wanted to be. I liked the idea of being a pilot or astronaut – an author was never on the cards. In my early teens my mum passed away. This event rocked my tiny world. I felt alone. Looking back now I realise that my coping mechanism was to escape into the world of fantasy. I dreamt up a story where two similar races where at war; Greys and Blues. This would become the basis for the sci-fi book series Lore of Energy and Light® two decades later.

It took a long time to put pen to paper. When you talk to other authors you hear that story again and again. It took them a long time to actually start writing their ideas even though it had been in their mind for years. Start writing today! If you have an idea, why wait? You will only wish you had started earlier. The moment you type the first sentence, your idea becomes reality. Cherish and feed your ideas. Creativity is good for your mind and body – yet another reason to write regularly. Remember, break the rules.
May the stars be aligned.
