What is the Alliance of Planets?
Also known as the “Alliance”, the Alliance of Planets are colonies, cities, races and planets who fight together under the banner of a golden cross in common cause against the Valkers. At first this coalition was small – just nine planets came together under treaty. This was at a time early in the history of D’Olex (the known universe) where the Valker threat was not considered great. In fact, many planets were still openly trading or negotiating with the Valkers during the formation of the Alliance. It was not until the Valkers waged war beyond their own solar system that the threat became apparent to the many.
Planets that previously refused the original treaty now scrambled to join. But the leaders of these new planets had steep demands for their loyalty. In exchange for their Warriors and resources they pushed for the creation of a governing council to ensure everyone had a voice when it came to decisions of war. Reaching cooperation between the nine founding planets was manageable, but navigating the political interests of such a vast array of newly joined planets was going to require a new approach.
It was a necessity for a unified front against the Valkers. To solidify this “treaty of the many”, the Alliance of Planets formed a political arena called the Interstellar Quorum. Each planet sent forth Representatives to speak on their behalf during debates (“Counts”). Any decision regarding war, resources, levies or anything else had to go a vote. The outcome of a Count was final. All Planets had to obey the will of the Interstellar Quorum. Representatives became quite powerful because they could control where “Warriors of the Cross” would be deployed. This was soon a cause of friction amongst the military Commanders in the Alliance of Planets who felt they knew better when it came to matters of battle.
Early in its inception the Interstellar Quorum was hosted by a different city on a different planet when Counts were called. Often these gatherings were held at existing sporting arenas or administration complexes large enough to hold all of the Representatives. Some time passed before the decision was made to construct a permanent seat for the Interstellar Quorum; one that would serve the growing number of planets joining the Alliance now and long into the future. It was to be an enormous space station, and a symbol of power and defiance. The centre of this giant station held a vast arena with a funnel of seats for Representatives. This space station became known as Quorum Treaty – a place where the majority of voices made treaty decisions that became law.
